Salinas Caltrans crews find limb possibly connected to a deadly Highway 101 crash

A lower part of a human leg was discovered by Caltrans crews near Highway 101 and Sherwood Dr. in Salinas Friday morning, according to California Highway Patrol.

Investigating officers said the body part most likely belongs to a woman who was hit and killed during a crash on Highway 101 in April.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office coroner unit has been working to identify the victim ever since.

Officers said its not uncommon to find body parts after an investigation at the scene of a crash has been completed. They said it can be a challenge to gather all of the evidence if the accident scene spans a large distance.

CHP said highway traffic contributes to the scattering of evidence, which tends to happen when highways are reopened.
