A woman visiting the Central Coast from China, was killed in a car accident in Big Sur Sunday evening, according to California Highway Patrol.

Officers said Lei Guzngzhon, 47, died when the rental car she and her family were driving, a Chevy Impala, rolled over her on State Route 1 near Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.

CHP said Guzngzhon, her husband and daughter, pulled over on the side of the road. Her husband and daughter had crossed Route 1 when the car started to roll, officers said.

Officers said Guzngzhon tried to stop the runaway car, by attempting to run over to the driver’s side door. As she ran toward the door, she tripped and fell backward, then the car ran over her, CHP said.

Officers said Guzngzhon was killed at the scene and several people driving by tried to help save her life.

Route 1 was closed Sunday for about 2 hours while officers assisted at the scene of the accident.

CHP said Guzngzhon’s daughter attends college in St. Louis, and they were driving through Big Sur on their way to San Francisco.
