UPDATE: Driver arrested on DUI charge in deadly Prunedale crash, CHP says

UPDATE 3:08 p.m.: California Highway Patrol confirmed the driver in Wednesday night’s deadly crash was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence.

Diego Rodriguez, 26, is facing a DUI charge and suffered a broken arm among other injuries, officers said.

“The driver is looking at potentially two felony charges: one for vehicular manslaughter and another for driving under the influence of alcohol causing injuries,” said CHP Officer Jaime Rios.

CHP said the other surviving passenger, Oscar Barron, 21, is recovering from spinal fractures.

The name of the 26-year-old victim who died is not being released yet.

Rios confirmed the three men had all been at a friend’s house drinking earlier Wednesday night.

Many residents who live along Castroville Boulevard said that drivers whip around blind turns at high speeds.

One of those residents, Jesus Campo, braves the elements on foot.

“I think like four or five days a week, I walk like an hour,” Campo said.

It’s how he said he gets his exercise, opting not to walk in Manzanita Park because according to him, his car was stolen there.

Now, he’s up close and personal with the traffic.

“The cars are coming fast, like over 65 miles [per hour],” he said.

UPDATE 5/7/2015 8:55 a.m.: One person is dead after a crash on Castroville Boulevard near Manzanita Park just after 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, according to California Highway Patrol.

Officers said three people in their 20s were in the car when for an unknown reason, the car veered off the road. They said the driver of the 99 Acura 3.0 TL, a 26-year-old male from Oxnard, California, lost control of the car and slid across both lanes of Castroville Boulevard. Officers said the car then hit a tree on the north side of the road.

CHP said the driver had two passengers, a 21-year-old male from Cloverdale, CA, who survived, and a 26-year-old male from Salinas, CA, who was killed in the crash.

CHP said the 26-year-old was sitting in the back of the car and was fatally hurt when the car crashed into the tree. The driver and the front passenger were sent to Natividad Medical Center for their injuries, officers said.

CHP believes alcohol was a factor in this crash, but the incident is still under investigation.
