UPDATE: Market Street re-opens after two cars burn in Salinas storage unit fire

UPDATE 3:24 p.m.: Salinas fire crews said Market Street re-opened at about 2:45 p.m. after being shut down for about three hours due to a fire inside three storage units.

UPDATE 1:06 p.m.: Salinas fire crews said the fire was knocked down around 12:15 p.m. on West Market Street. Two vintage cars had to be towed out of the storage sheds where they caught on fire, crews said.

Two cars destroyed in Salinas storage unit fire, businesses evacuated

Crews said the fire started after an air compressor exploded while a person was working inside. They said that person was taken to Natividad Medical Center after they were hit in the abdomen by a piece of the air compressor.

UPDATE 5/1/15 12:02 p.m.: Salinas Fire crews said vintage cars caught fire then that fire spread to the private storage unit. The owner said a ’55 Chevy and a ’68 Chevelle are completely burned and a Pontiac GTO partially caught on fire.

5/1/15 11:33 a.m.: Salinas Fire crews are on the scene of a large fire inside a storage unit in the area of West Market and West Streets.

The fire started just before 11:00 a.m. and Fire Chief Ed Rodriguez said one person was injured and businesses in the area have been evacuated.

Power has been shutdown in the area because a power line is dangerously close to where the fire is burning.

Market Street will be closed for another few hours as of this post. News Channel 5 has a crew on scene.
