Sharks spotted off of Manresa State Beach in Watsonville

With Thursday’s warm temperatures, many people may have been tempted to take a dip into the ocean, but a head’s up. At least seven sharks were spotted near La Selva Beach in Santa Cruz County.

On Wednesday, four sharks were spotted just off the Central Coast.

Video from Specialized Helicopters shows a shark swimming at Manresa State Beach near the cement ship and the Seascape Resort in Aptos. Local naturalist Sean van Sommeran took a look at the video. He says it’s common to see whales and sharks in the Monterey Bay Waters, but there’s been a lot of activity lately. That could explain the recent sightings.

“It’s been a very busy last couple of weeks with whale strandings and orca activity in the bay,” van Sommeran said. “It’s Monterey Bay. We call in Pelagic Park. It’s often times loaded with epic wildlife, including sharks.”

He noted the sharks in the video could be in the 10-12′ range and could be Great White sharks.
