Police: Monterey man doing yard work finds old mortar explosive

Neighbors have been allowed back in to their homes in Monterey after the Monterey County bomb squad secured an old mortar explosive, police said.

Monterey police said the device is on its way to a lab for testing.

A man in Monterey was doing some yard work Saturday afternoon and dug up an old mortar round, Monterey police told News Channel 5.

This happened on the 700 block of Lobos Street and 10 homes in the area have been evacuated, police said.

The Monterey County bomb squad has been called in to assess the situation, police said.
