Salinas police investigating charges on both drivers in Tuesday’s crash

UPDATE 2/11/15 11:17 a.m.: On Wednesday morning, Salinas police investigators said it’s unclear who is at fault for a bad accident Tuesday night at Freedom Parkway and N. Sanborn Rd.

Police said a 4-year-old boy was flown to Oakland Children’s Hospital for a head wound and other injuries. His 1-year-old brother was not hurt.

Investigators said Hayde Santos, 23, was driving her Honda Civic westbound on Freedom Parkway and made a left turn onto southbound N. Sanborn Road. They said she turned into the path of another Civic traveling eastbound. Officers said Santos was also uninjured and had been driving without a license.

Officers said the 40-year-old driver of the other Civic crashed into the passenger side of Santos’ car. He wasn’t hurt, but police said he was driving on a suspended license for failing to pay child support.

Police said Santos’ husband, Ruben Perez, 25, had major injuries and firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to get him out. Medics found Perez had broken legs, a broken pelvis, a broken and dislocated left arm and cuts to his face. He is still in ICU in serious but stable condition, and is expected to survive.

Investigators said the crash is still under investigation and charges are pending on both drivers.

UPDATE: A child was taken by helicopter to San Jose after a two-car crashon Sanborn and Freedom Parkway in Salinas Tuesday night.

Salinas police told News Channel 5 the driver of a silver car broadsided a green car carrying a family four people.

Using the Jaws of Life, the driver in the green car was rescued but is seriously injured. All four were taken to the hospital.

Salinas police Sgt. Dana Cornelison said “All the parties don’t appear to be under the influence. So we’re checking to see if there is a distracted driving issue, perhaps cell phone use or texting or other factors.”

Police say the driver in the silver car was not hurt.
