Central Coast fans watch Super Bowl 49
Should the Monday after the Super Bowl become a national holiday? NewsChannel 5 brought that national debate to the Central Coast.
“We spent a good week thinking what kind of specials we want to do. We made up a couple of drink specials like shooters, a Patriots shooter and a Seahawks shooter,” said Karrie Wright, bar manager at Salinas Sports Tavern.
Super Bowl Sunday one the most anticipated days of the year for sports fans and at Salinas Sports Tavern the fans couldn’t hold back their excitement.
“The manager told us that they had to order almost double the amount of beer for Super Bowl Sunday compared to any other day,” Wright said.
Chef Robbie Valdez at Alvarado Street Brewery and grill in Monterey said the restaurant stocked up on food for Super Bowl XLIX and even had a special menu.
“I love barbecuing so I just picked the ribs, the chicken, you know, whatever sounds barbeque-like I guess,” Valdez said.
Just down the street Paul Whitecross, owner of the Brittannia Arms Monterey said he always looks forward to hosting Super Bowl parties at his bar.
“You know we probably had to double up on a lot of things that we normally wouldn’t just for today,” Whitecross said.
An estimated 1.5 million Americans were expected to take Monday off work. The Salinas Sports Tavern managers said a national holiday for Super Bowl would only help business.
“Being in the bar industry, yeah, we want them to come here so yeah give them the day off because they’ll just come here, cure their hangover and we’ll be happy to see them,” Wright said.
