Salinas man sentenced to 26 years to life in prison

A Salinas man accused of stabbing and killing 57-year-old Victor Sosa on Aug, 1, 2013, was sentenced 26 years to life in prison.

Salinas police say 23-year-old Richard Gutierrez entered the 99 Cent Store on Laurel Drive in Salinas for an attempted robbery. He confronted Sosa, who was working as a security guard, attacked him and then stabbed him repeatedly.

Officers say customers tried to help the victim by throwing canned goods at the attacker. Gutierrez ran out of the store and was immediately arrested by police.
