Making a Difference: Operation Freedom Paws

For 14 years, Sergeant Jeff Wilson served for the United State Army. In 2003, Wilson injured his knee and returned to Virginia. Unfortunately, his battle continued off the field when he was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

“My main conflict was in Iraq in 2003. I was doing everything from dropping off Special Forces troops to picking up POW’s. But when I returned home, I couldn’t be alone. Fear would just take over” said Wilson.

Wilson suffered for years until he reached his breaking point and turned to Operation Freedom Paws in San Martin and found his service dog Selah.

Selah is a certified service dog. She is specifically trained to help Wilson through Operation Freedom Paws. The dogs they train empower veterans and others with disabilities live a quality life. For 48 weeks, each student works with their dog to build a relationship to feel safe, secure and manage day to day life.

Mary Cortani is the founder of Operation Freedom Paws. She says the organization offers an opportunity for people to get back their lives.

Kevin Bearb was an Air Force rank E4 based out of Edward’s Air Force Base. He says finding Operation Freedom Paws and getting his service dog Mel saved his life.

“My life before Mel was limited. I stayed inside my house with my blinds drawn” said Bearb.

Kevin’s time in the United State Air Force left him with PTSD and sever migraines. Mel is trained to give him an early warning that helps him feel safe.

“She started nosing my hand which is unusual for her. It’s a signal for us to check in with ourselves. Are we nervous, are we hurt?” says Bearb.

Helping those in need with four paws, two feet become one team that’s making a difference.
