CAMPAIGN 2014: Monterey County Sheriff/Coroner

The contentious race for Monterey County Sheriff remained neck and neck Wednesday morning with just two percent separating the candidates.

As of midnight Wednesday, challenger Steve Bernal held a narrow lead with 51 percent of the vote to current Sheriff Scott Miller’s 49 percent.

That’s with all 194 precincts reporting, according to the Monterey County Elections Department.

Absentee votes continue to be counted and the elections department expects updated tallies Wednesday afternoon.

NewsChannel 5 reporter Jake Reiner spoke with both candidates Tuesday night as the votes continue to be counted.
