Salinas Police: Felon arrested with assault rifle

Salinas police arrested a 19-year-old Wednesday for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Officers were called to a disturbance in the 1300 block of Wiren Avenue around 7 a.m. They contacted Christian Coronel, who police say is a known gang member and convicted felon on probation.

Coronel was wanted in connection with an incident on Sunday in which he allegedly brandished a rifle at a victim.

Wednesday, police found a fully-loaded AK-47 assault rifle in Coronel’s car.

He was booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of being a gang member in possession of an assault weapon, possessing a firearm as a felon and possessing ammunition as a felon.
