Capitola skate park stirs up safety concerns for parents

A new park meant to serve local kids and dogs is skating on this ice with some parents. This issue comes as city leaders are already moving ahead with two portions of the park. On Thursday, NewsChannel 5 went to Capitola to find out why safety surrounding a proposed skate park is causing some controversy.

The city said a skate park set to be built right here at McGregor Park, off a busy road along Highway 1. But some parents said they’re worried kids who want to walk here, wouldn’t be safe.

“It’s a horrible spot, it’s absolutely the worst spot in our town.,” said Marie Martorella.

Martorella doesn’t understand why the city won’t focus on creating a safer path for kids to access the park, before putting in something meant for kids. The city said its working on new infrastructure over the next four years, to make improvements. A $50,000 donation dedicated to building a temporary skate park has already been put on the table, making it attractive for the city to move ahead with now.

“Well lets do several things that this community seems I want all three of those aspects is what the community is asking for,” said Capitola Administrative Services Director Lisa Murphy.

A dog park will also be a major component, in honor of Joshua Laven, killed while riding his bike along Highway 1 two years ago. His dog Ozzi waited by his side, until first responders arrived.

“Then once the Ozzi Park Foundation heard about it, they were excited to step up be the first partner,” Murphy said.

Tricia Proctor said she doesn’t want to see another devastating accident, asking the city to reconsider the location.

“There’s no sidewalks. They’d have to go by vehicle. Do it right or just don’t do it at all,” Proctor said.

The city said the park will be geared towards middle school aged kids. With places to park, some residents think the safety aspect may need a little more consideration.

“I think there’s ways around it but I understand how people would be concerned if they’re kids were gonna try and walk there,” said Victor Yanez.

Next week, the city plans to discuss the skate park portion again and may go back to drawing board to come up with some changes to the overall design.
