Free spay/neuter services offered for cats in Watsonville-area

The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter has received a grant to help them provide free spaying and neutering services for cats in the Watsonville area.

The $86,000 grant from PetSmart Charities will specifically go toward these services in the zip code of 95076.

To receive the free spay/neuter surgery, cat owners are required to purchase: a microchip (which includes registration), rabies and certain vaccinations, all for a total of $5.

To further entice residents to take advantage of this offer, the shelter also will be giving away a free case of canned cat food (24 cans) to participants.

South County has had a particular number of stray and feral cats in recent years and spaying/neutering services can go a long a way toward reducing those populations.

The animal shelter program also helps residents comply with current animal ownership laws, and to help return cats to their homes as quickly as possible through a microchip which provides permanent identification.
