Watsonville music teacher nominated for Grammy

Music lovers around the country will tune in for the 57th Annual Grammy Awards in February. While many may be thinking of some of the biggest names in the industry, a local music teacher is up for one of the awards.

Dr. David Dehner has been working as a vocal arts director at Monte Vista Christian School in Watsonville for 13 years now. He teaches more than 100 student singers at the school. The students sing in different genres from classical, pop to gospel.

“I’ve sung before but have never been able to do so well,” said Gavin Mummert, music student.

Mummert said he’s not surprised Dehner is one of 25 semifinalists across 17 states nominated for the Music Educator Award. The award recognizes the educator who has made a significant lasting contribution and commitment to music education. Anyone can nominate a teacher, but only a handful are chosen.

“I feel humbled because the award represents more than just me. It represents all music educators across the country who give their heart and soul to their students,” said Dehner.

Each semifinalist has the chance to earn $6,000 for their music program. Dehner said with funding always being a challenge in art education, the music program could really benefit.

“To have an advancing arts program you have to have a lot of music, you have to be able to travel, students need private lessons, so we’re always short in funding,” Dehner said.

He hopes what the students are taught in the classroom will take them high in their music careers.

Ten finalists will be announced in December.

The winner will be announced during Grammy Week, then flown to Los Angeles to accept the award along with money.
