Gas leak in Aptos prompts road closures, early dimissal at one school

A natural gas leak on Valencia Road in Aptos prompted road closures in the area while crews responded, and prompted officials at one local elementary school to dismiss students early.

According to Aptos Fire officials, the leak was reported around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Fire crews responded and CHP was assisting with road closures in the area. Portions of Valencia remain closed off at Cathedral and at Trout Gulch Roads while the gas line is repaired.

Students at nearby Valencia Elementary School were moved into a secure area of the school, and parents were called for early pickup as of 11:40 a.m., Aptos Fire officials said.

PG&E arrived to shut down the gas line.

PG&E spokeswoman Monica Tell said a two-inch gas line ruptured during construction work in the area.

Tell said the line was unmarked. She reminds people to call “811” before undertaking any construction projects to make sure utility lines are marked to prevent this kind of problem.
