Monterey County launches “Three Feet for Safety Act” awareness campaign

The Transportation Agency for Monterey County is launching a “Three Feet for Safety Act” awareness campaign as the new state law goes into effect Tuesday, Sept. 16.

The law is aimed at improving safety for bicyclists and requires drivers provide at least three feet between any part of their vehicle and bicyclists when passing,

TAMC’s awareness campaign will consist of the following:

Distribute 3-Feet for Safety vehicle stickers and outreach materials to Monterey County law enforcement agencies, local Department of Motor Vehicles offices, schools, civic institutions and the greater community.
Provide a demonstration and outreach materials at Ciclova Salinas on Saturday, Nov. 1, Bike Month in May 2015, and other community events.
Provide information on the Transportation Agency website

If drivers do not have three feet clearance to pass bicyclists, the new law requires they slow to a “reasonable and prudent” speed until it is safe to pass. Drivers who violate the law will be cited and fined $35.
