Watsonville police station evacuated over unknown substance

The Watsonville Police Department was evacuated Wednesday after an unknown substance was left in a police locker.

The evacuation lasted two hours as hazardous material teams confiscated the suspicious substance.

Police said it all started when a social services agency reported that an unknown substance was mailed to them Tuesday. The officer, who collected it, was reportedly instructed to keep it in the police locker room.

The department said it was miscommunication.

The substance is in a safe place and will be investigated.
