Tall ship glides into the Monterey Bay

It’s not a real pirate ship in the Monterey Bay, but the 110-foot tall ship will still impress parents and children alike with it’s design and teachings about history.

The wooden vessel named, the “Irving Johnson” is docked at Fisherman’s Wharf and open to the public tomorrow in Monterey through next weekend. It coincides with the opening of the newest exhibit at the Museum of Monterey.

It’s designated the “Official Tall Ship and Maritime Ambassador of the City of Los Angeles.”

The tall ship was built in 2003 using both traditional and modern ship building methods. The state-of-the-art brigantine design is built to last 100 years. It is used primarily for youth education programs.

Monterey Council Member Nancy Selfridge helped organize the tall ship visit and museum exhibit.

“These events offer children the opportunity to learn about American history in a fun and interactive way,” said Council Member Selfridge in a news release. “The nearly 90-foot sails are sure to attract many people to our waterfront.”

HOURS OF OPERATION:

The ship will be open noon to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday.

The ship will be open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday & Friday.
