Fire burns vacant building on former Fort Ord

Fire crews are cleaning up the remains of a structure fire in the former Fort Ord area Wednesday morning, but faced several challenges in putting it out.

Crews battled the flames all morning after the call came in at about 4 a.m. that there may be a vegetation fire near Patton Parkway. When Marina fire crews got on scene, it was determined that a vacant duplex was on fire Hayes Circle near 4th Avenue.

The Marina Fire Department chief blamed the lack of a water source in the area for how long it took to get the fire under control. There is no water due to damaged and vandalized infrastructure.

The fire was within the Cypress Knolls Project area of Marina and is proposed to be demolished soon.

A fire engine and water tender from the Presidio of Monterey Fire Department responded to assist in transporting water from the area of California and Reindollar Avenues.

Marina fire crews will most likely be on scene most of the day to totally extinguish the heavily fire damaged structure.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.
