DACA recipients and supporters stage walkout in Santa Cruz

Dozens of students from seven Santa Cruz County high schools and colleges walked out of class and rallied in Downtown Santa Cruz, Friday.

The group came together in support of DACA recipients. The Obama-era program that created DACA protects undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children.

“I have a lot of friends and coworkers that are undocumented. I wanted to come out and support them. It’s really heartbreaking honestly. I wish it was a lot easier for everybody, but that’s not the world we live in. We have to try to change it,” said Santa Cruz High School senior, Jordan Brown.

Next Friday, the Supreme Court plans to review President Trump’s decision to cancel deportation protections for DACA recipients. The pending decision is predicted to affect nearly 200,000 in California and 700,000 across the U.S.

Rallies are taking place nationwide this week.
