Occasional Light Rain Lingers
Unsettled weather will continue over the next few days. The low pressure system that brought widespread rain this weekend will linger offshore through mid-week, occasionally throwing rounds of showers our way. High pressure to the southwest will then build in for the weekend and while it won’t dominate the weather pattern, a much-warmer air mass will move in. High temperatures should return to normal by Friday.
*Beach Hazards*
… for the immediate coast of Santa Cruz & Monterey Counties through 5AM
Wednesday for sneaker waves and strong rip currents.
A long period southwest to west swell will continue to impact the coastline
into Wednesday morning before subsiding. Energetic swell periods of 18 to 20
seconds will persist into tonight and then decrease to below 17 seconds by
Wednesday afternoon and evening.
Sneaker waves can knock unsuspecting beach goers over and into the sea. Rip
currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea.
Steep beaches will have a higher risk of sneaker wave and rip current activity
with greater wave run-up onto beaches.
Sneaker waves heighten the risk of unsuspecting beach goers being swept into
the sea by a wave. Rip currents are typically more frequent and stronger in the
vicinity of jetties, inlets, and piers. People walking along the beach should
never turn their back to the sea. Fisherman should avoid fishing from rocks or
jetties. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions. Anyone
caught in a rip current should swim parallel to the coast to escape the rip
current before trying to swim for shore.
Overnight: Partly cloudy with light rain likely in the south. A light
shower or two may make it as far north as the Monterey Bay Area. Expect lows in
the 40s for most areas with a few 30s in the northern valleys.
Wednesday: Partly cloudy with isolated showers. Continued cool with
highs in the mid 50s to mid 60s.
Thursday: Light rain in the morning,
then becoming partly cloudy. A bit cool with highs in the 50s-60s.
Extended: Warmer, more seasonable
temperatures expected starting Friday through Easter weekend and beyond. No
rain in the forecast through next week.
The outlook from the Climate Prediction Center for April 15th – 21st
calls for the likelihood of ABOVE normal temperatures and BELOW
normal precipitation.
