California Rodeo Salinas Kicks Off

Thursday was the first full day of the California rodeo in Salinas.

“It's California's biggest rodeo. And I do a lot of rodeos around the country, around the world. And it's definitely my favorite to come back each time because, they just, keep it fun," said Will Roberts, professional trick rider.

Events Thursday included freestyle bullfights, calf racing, trick riding and barrel racing, motorcycle stunts and much more.

The arena stands can fit over 16 thousand spectators.

The Rodeo estimates that with all the buzz, it drums up 18 million dollars for the local economy.

Linda and Robert have been coming to the rodeo here since the 1960’s.

“Back in the day, it was, just, you know, wasn't, they didn't have the shuttle service, I don't think. And they just it just seemed like it was not as efficient, you know, wasn't as professional. It’s really done well.”

They took the short shuttle between the front gate to their cars in the parking lot.

“I love driving, so for me it’s you know, I love it.
Allright right here!
No I’m taking you inside!
Oh, even better!”

But this is the first year there’s also a shuttle for people avoiding the traffic near the complex entirely.

“It was actually really nice, it reminded me of a field trip. Yeah, we were excited to be on the bus,” said Tiana and Kayla of Salinas.

And others are worried less about traffic, and more about just getting home safely.

“To those of you who drink, don’t drink and drive. Call an Uber, Lyft, rideshare,” said Rodeo Bartender Bradley Watson.

"We have a designated driver. Me! Like responsible people should," said Martha and Ruby.

Safety in general is a big part of putting on the Rodeo. Thousands of folks inside, and more than a 150 security personnel trying to keep things safe. That’s volunteer security and paid security, as well as Salinas police officers.

“I think they’re pretty clear about what you can and can’t do,
The police and everything, they keep it good, but you know what this is a great hometown, family event,
I think it’s gonna be really safe,” said Roberts.
