A pedestrian was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Castro Valley on Thursday afternoon and a suspect was arrested shortly after, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol said the incident happened in the intersection of Somerset and Alvertus avenues east of Lake Chabot Road at about 1:38 p.m. Officers arrived and found a 50-year-old man in the middle of the roadway; he died at the scene despite life-saving efforts, the CHP said.
During the investigation, officers identifed the suspect vehicle as a white Chevrolet Tahoe SUV and traced it to a Castro Valley address, the CHP said. At about 3 p.m., CHP officers and Alameda County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 63-year-old Timothy Dewitt at his home.
Dewitt was booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in death.
“This tragic incident underscores the devastating consequences of hit-and-run crashes,” said CHP Lt. Nick Pascoe in a statement. “As California’s state police, we’re committed to pursuing those who leave a crash scene and to seeking accountability for victims and their families.”
The CHP asked anyone who witnessed the crash or has information to contact the CHP Hayward Area office at (510) 427-9013 or email 345recklessdriving@chp.ca.gov.
