Marina is now Blue Zone Project Community certified

MARINA, Calif. (KION-TV) - The City of Marina has earned a Blue Zone Community designation for making a community that thrives on healthy and sustainable choices.

According to the City of Marina, the city is one of six cities and communities in Monterey County to do so. Blue Zones Project is an initiative that focuses on making healthier changes, both mentally and physically.

For Marina, this includes having restaurants that serve smaller plates and plant-based dishes, healthier items at the check-out lane, quiet spaces in office settings, and creating employee wellness teams. This also extends into schools with safe walking routes and school ambassador programs to neighbors in the community, creating walking clubs.

“This milestone reflects years of partnership and dedication from our community. Together, we embraced a vision for a healthier, happier future, and now that vision is becoming reality," said City of Marina Mayor Bruce Delgado. "By working collectively, we are building a community where well-being is the norm and every resident has the opportunity to thrive.”

The official certification was celebrated during a City Council meeting on Sept. 16.

Monterey County became the first countywide Blue Zone designation in California in August of this year.
