CHP warns drivers of potential hazards, slick roads

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION-TV) - With rain possible for parts of the Central Coast tonight into tomorrow, the California Highway Patrol is warning drivers about potentially dangerous conditions.

This video shows similar scattered showers from 2019.

Officers say when oil and debris build up on dry pavement, the first rainfall can turn highways and local roads into safety hazards.

"Speed is the number one crash factor across California for crashes. Especially now that this inclement weather may be coming into our area, it's important to always be cognizant of your speed," said Officer Saul Perez of CHP Monterey.

Officer Perez adds that small choices behind the wheel can make a big difference, including putting your phone away.

Distracted driving is a growing problem, and bad weather makes it even more dangerous.
