City of Watsonville releases new statement on Fire in the Sky RC plane incident
WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION-TV) - The City of Watsonville has released a new statement in response to the Fire in the Sky Open House incident after two people were injured nearby.
Our thoughts are with the two people who were injured during this unfortunate incident. We are hoping for their safe and speedy recovery.
The City continues to work closely with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office. To maintain the integrity of their investigation, any additional information regarding the incident will come directly from the Sheriff’s Office.
RC Plane injures 2 at Watsonville Fire in the Sky Event
Two adults were injured during Watsonville Airport's Fire in the Sky event on Saturday night. A remote-controlled airplane went off course and hit the 2 people outside a home on Buena Vista Drive. Eyewitnesses say the RC plane veered out of the event site after taking off.
KION's Lee Solomon was hosting the event and was able to capture footage of the crash site and responding agencies.
It happened just after 7pm, the small aircraft also doing damage to the outside of the home. One person sustained moderate injuries while the other had more serious injuries, but not life threatening. Both victims were taken to a local hospital by responders.
The city of Watsonville says that local police, fire, airport personnel, California Highway Patrol, and Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office all responded to the incident immediately. The Sheriff's office is now taking the lead on the investigation, looking for how it all happened.
