Salinas receive signature verification for repeal referendum for rent-related ordinances

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) - The City of Salinas announced that it has received a signature verification for the Protect Salinas Renter petition over the rent-related ordinances.

The Registrar of Voters has completed their review, providing a certificate of Signature Verification that reflects the number of valid registered voter signatures, which meets the 10 percent requirement.

With this, the petition will be scheduled to be presented before the City Council on Aug. 26.

During that, the Council will be presented with two options from the petition: either repeal the ordinance or put the question to a vote in a special or general municipal election.

If the Council repeals the ordinance, no further action is needed, and the ordinance will remain in effect; no additional election proceedings will occur.

If the council takes the second option, it must call a special election within the next 88 days and identify a date at a future City Council meeting. The Council can also opt to add it to a general election, which is currently scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026.
