Salinas Finance Commitee discuss the future of the Chinatown Navigation Center this week

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) - Discussions are continuing in Salinas this week over whether the city has enough funding to keep the Chinatown Navigation Center open for the city's homeless population.

A city report highlighted a shortfall of over $1.5 million this fiscal year to keep the shelter open past Nov. 30.

Staff have been working with nonprofits and the continuum of care to identify additional funding with the possibility of securing $200,000.

In that case, the Chinatown Navigation Center might be able to stay open until March 2026.

Yet, the report indicates that in either scenario, the center will close and the city will collaborate with its partners to relocate shelter residents to alternative housing placements.
