LAFCO report outlines possible next steps Felton Fire

FELTON, Calif. (KION-TV) - People living in Felton may soon face a proposal for a new tax. Local regulators are urging the Felton Fire District to make a plan for its future and suggesting a merger with another fire agency as the best option.

The Local Agency Formation Commission of Santa Cruz, or LAFCO, is releasing a report outlining possible next steps.

It says the district is at a critical crossroads, facing low volunteer numbers and mounting costs.

The report suggests 12 potential options, including raising more money for paid firefighters and being absorbed by another fire district.

The report indicates that in either of those cases, property owners would likely need to pay a new tax.

The LAFCO report gives Felton Fire until October 6th to choose an option.

If the district chooses to remain independent, it must submit a detailed operations and finance plan.

If Felton Fire does not have a plan by Oct. 6, the report says LAFCO could begin the process of merging the district with another fire agency.
