City of Salinas to hear human trafficking report, possible correlation with food trucks

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) - The Salinas City Council will hear a new report on how to tackle human trafficking on Kern Street during a special meeting Tuesday.

The report by the City Cross Department Coordination Team aims to address key issues that the city hopes will mitigate sex work along Kern Street

This includes increased lighting, the addition of no-parking zones, the placement of security cameras, and the relocation of food trucks away from the area.

Following a lighting needs assessment due to the Alisal Vibrancy Plan, lighting could be added along Kern Street between East Alisal and Roosevelt Streets

Four cameras would be installed in key intersections to deter criminal activity. Those intersections have yet to be identified.

The report also discusses a probable correlation between food trucks along Kern Street and prostitution in the area. It also recommends a six-month pilot program establishing no-parking zones along Kern Street between East Alisal and East Market.

Upon hearing the report, the recommendation is to hold a community meeting focusing on these changes and recommendations to garner feedback from the community.

The Salinas City Council will hold the special meeting on Tuesday, May 27, at 4 p.m.
