Castroville honors fallen heroes at Avenue of the Flags Ceremony

CASTROVILLE, Calif. (KION-TV) - North Monterey County marked Memorial Day with the 29th annual avenue of the flags ceremony, bringing together families, friends and local leaders.

People gathering to place American flags on graves at the Castroville Public Cemetery in Moss Landing-- remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Organizers reading the names of local veterans laid to rest, the solemn sound of "Taps" ringing out in their honor.

One of the event's founding organizers says this year, he's helping a new generation of veterans take the reins.

"It started off with the VFW and because of their age and inability to continue this event, they asked me to do whatever I can to continue making sure this event is organized like it is today" Vietnam war veteran Louis Montaño said.

A veteran's display area was also available before the ceremony between 8 and 10 a.m., so people could share pictures of their loved ones.
