Martinelli’s recalls more than 170,000 apple juice bottles over toxic Patulin substance

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION) -- Watsonville-based Martinelli's has recalled more than 170,000 apple juice bottles due to a potential patulin contamination.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, 173,616 bottles are said to have been affected.

According to the World Health Organization, patulin can cause symptoms such as nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances, and vomiting in humans and, in severe cases, can cause damage to the liver, spleen, and kidneys.

In a statement from the Watsonville-based company, they stated:

In full cooperation with the FDA, Martinelli’s issued a voluntary recall of the small amount of product potentially impacted by this issue. Martinelli’s has worked with those retailers that received the product and the retailers have removed anything that still remained in inventory. No other production dates or Martinelli’s products are affected by this recall. To date, we have not had any reported health issues related to the recall. 

The recall was first issued on March 18.
