Starbuck baristas in Scotts Valley vote in favor on unionization

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Starbucks baristas from the Mt. Hermon Road and SkyPark location in Scotts Valley have voted to unionize over the weekend.

The workers voted 15-3 in an election to join Starbucks Workers United, making them the 49th store to do so.

"This win proves the power of solidarity, and we’re ready to fight for the respect, support, and working conditions we deserve,” Scotts Valley barista Serrana Cypret said.

Starbucks Workers United began in August 2021 after several Starbucks stores in Buffalo, New York voted to unionize.

The vote comes as Starbucks and the Workers Union are set to hold a bargaining meeting with a mediator present after more than 300 stores closed on Christmas Eve in part of a strike against the coffee chain.
