Prescribed burns reduce fire risk in San Benito, Monterey Counties

SAN BENITO COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Don't be alarmed about the smoke in the air earlier in San Benito County as it was a scheduled prescribed burn.

According to Cal Fire BEU, the prescribed burn sent smoke across the skies and could be seen between Chualar and Hollister as 95 acres were set to burn.

Prescribed or controlled burns reduce wildfire risk and prevent overgrowth to improve the ecosystem's health.

Another controlled burn was a pile burn in South Monterey County on the Ranchita Truck Trail as part of an effort to reduce dead vegetation in the area.
