Salinas seeks letter in support for ICE school, daycare assembly bill

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Salinas looks to approve a letter of support for a new assembly bill that prohibits ICE from entering schools and daycares without approval.

The letter from the Salinas City Council supports Assembly Bill 49 which requires those working for the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to provide valid identification, a written statement of purpose plus a warrant before entering schools or daycares.

This also includes getting approval from educational and childcare officials.

In the draft letter for support, the City of Salinas writes that the City "wants to assure immigrants, refugees, and other newcomers opportunities for economic security, empowerment, and civic engagement, which are safe and free from discrimination, oppression, and violence, including safety to attend and work at our schools and to send children to daycare."

The letter for support follows a similar letter showing support for the bill from the County of Monterey.

The letter will be voted on during the Salinas City Council meeting on February 25.
