Abandoned Building Fire in Salinas

The streets of Salinas were filled with smoke on Monday afternoon, after a fire was sparked at an abandoned building at 34 Soledad Street. Salinas Fire says that they were called to the scene around 4:30pm, getting multiple reports of black smoke flowing from the building's roof.

Due to the building's age, fire crews were not sent inside the building for safety concerns, opting instead to spray water from above the building onto the smoking roof, but that was a short lived effort. Firefighters now doing what they can to stop flames from spreading while waiting for the fire to die down enough for it to be safely extinguished. Fire Division Chief Chris Knapp says a demolition plan for the building is likely once those flames are out.

There have been no reported injuries. Salinas fire says that once the fire is out and they are safely able to enter the building, an investigation will into the cause of the fire will be done. Smoke could be visible around Salinas into the evening as the fire continues to burn.
