PG&E’s Elkhorn Battery Storage Facility Staying Offline until 2026

PG&E's Elkhorn Battery Energy Storage System has been offline since January's fire at the neighboring Vistra Battery Storage facility in Moss Landing. Service had been originally planned to be restored back on June 1st, but some operational issues have pushed back the reopening date to June 30th, 2026.
On June 1st, PG&E says that as crews were returning batteries to service, a clamp failure and subsequent coolant leak were discovered in one of the 256 megapacks on site. Tesla, which maintains the facility on PG&E's behalf, is now developing an inspection and repair plan to address the issue.
The utility maintains that the system will remain electrically disconnected from the power grid while repairs are being done.
PG&E also says that they are in contact with local stakeholders in the project with the updated timeline for repairs and reopening, while reaffirming their commitment to keeping the community informed on changes to work progress.
