Greece: Thousands march on anniversary of student uprising
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Thousands of people are marching through central Athens to mark the anniversary of a 1973 student uprising that was brutally crushed by the military dictatorship then ruling Greece. The anniversary is observed each year with marches from Athens Polytechnic university to the U.S. Embassy and have often turned violent in the past. Riot police stood by on Thursday, guarding embassies and other official buildings,. A police helicopter flew overhead, shining a spotlight on sections of the demonstration.. In 1973, the military regime that had been in power since 1967 sent police and troops to crush pro-democracy protests centered in the Athens Polytechnic. At least 20 people are believed to have been killed.
