NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party has a commanding lead in crucial state polls, despite criticism of his government’s handling of the pandemic, soaring unemployment and farmer protests. Partial results from the Election Commission show Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party comfortably ahead in Uttar Pradesh state. It is also set to keep control in Uttarakhand state. Meanwhile, the main opposition Congress party is facing a rout in Punjab. The results from the five states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa will dent the hopes of opposition parties that are banking on forming a united front to challenge Modi in the next general election in 2024.
