A San Jose police officer was hospitalized, and a suspect has died following a shootout south of the city’s downtown Tuesday evening.

Police said the shooting happened in the area of Lick Avenue and Goodyear Street near Caltrain’s Tamien Station and Highway 87 in the city’s Goodyear-Mastic neighborhood. There were dozens of officers and police vehicles seen in the area, along with ambulances.

The incident began earlier in the day, when officers spotted the vehicle of an armed robbery suspect. Police said the person was behind two different armed robberies over the weekend.

According to officers, the suspect led officers on a short pursuit before ditching the vehicle. The suspect entered a home with a family inside and hid.

When officers found the suspect, police said the suspect shot at them. Police returned fire and the suspect was killed.

The officer was taken to the hospital. After being initially considered to be in critical condition, police later said the officer was stable.

“Detectives are conducting a thorough investigation…gathering witness statements, evidence, things of that nature, so that we can also figure this out. We are trying to figure out how this transpired what happened and get a better understanding as well,” said department spokesperson Stacie Shih.

The family inside the home was not physically injured, police said.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s name.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were assisting police officers in the incident. The police department said it would share more information as it became available.
