Authorities in Santa Cruz County have arrested a man suspected of fatally stabbing an elderly woman inside a mall, in what police described as a random act of violence.

Around 12:45, police were called to the mall for a report of a stabbing near the food court exit. Responding officers found a victim with multiple stab wounds on Clares Street, across from the Macy’s exit and began life-saving measures, but she was declared dead at the scene.

Police said Monday a suspect was arrested on the 1400 block of 41st Street, and that, based on their investigation, they believe it was a random act of violence. On Tuesday, police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Tyler Liebelt of Santa Cruz.

“There is no indication that the suspect and victim knew one another prior to the attack,” police said.

In an update Tuesday afternoon, police identified the victim as Rachell Summers, a 73-year-old woman from Capitola.

“Our hearts remain with Rachell’s family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic and senseless act of violence,” the department said.

Jail records show Leibelt remains in custody without bail. It was not immediately known when he would appear in court.

Investigators are asking anyone with photographs, videos or other information to contact the Capitola Police Department at 831-475-4242.
