Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday night in Southern California, Ventura County Sheriff’s Office records show.

According to Ventura County inmate records, Spears was arrested by the California Highway Patrol at 9:28 p.m. Wednesday and released at 6:07 a.m. on Thursday. It is unclear why the pop singer was arrested.

A representative for Spears referred to the incident as “unfortunate” and “completely inexcusable.”

“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” the representative said. “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

She is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.

This is a developing story.
