Monterey city manager Hans Uslar is set to retire on December 30th, the city taking its first steps to find his replacement on Tuesday night. The council deciding to consult with an expert agency as they look for new talent to fill Uslar's big shoes.
The council also had the option of looking for his replacement internally, but council deciding to look outside the city instead. Mayor Tyller Williamson says that while he is confident that his city staff would do an excellent job of looking internally, the city wants an expert in their field that might not even be looking for a job right now.
Councilmembers also discussed the type of questions that will be asked of applicants for the position, hoping to keep a level of flexibility to check applicants' ability to improvise and respond quickly depending on the needs of the city.
Uslar says that the process for him to be promoted to city manager took 5 months, and he had already served as interim city manager in the past. The city hoping to be in a good position to have a new manager by the time Uslar is ready to retire at the end of the year.
