City of Watsonville planning commission moves forward with Capital Improvement Program, now heads to City Council

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION-TV) - The financing behind some of Watsonville’s biggest public projects is now one step closer to being finalized. On Tuesday night, the City of Watsonville’s Planning Commission unanimously recommended the Capital Improvement Program.

“We have to be prudent, but we have to get the job done in a high quality manner, so that it lasts as long as some of the projects here have already lasted," District 4 Commissioner Lowell Hurst said.

The plan isn’t a done deal just yet. It now heads to city council where they could decide to adopt it and make it a part of next fiscal year’s city budget.

The plan including several key projects such as a revitalization of the city plaza.

The estimated cost for the top six public projects is nearly $37 million. Roughly $10 million will be for a new pedestrian bridge over Highway 1 near Harkins Slough Road and the Safe Routes to School Project.

About $8 million are allocated towards the Ramsay Park Renaissance Project. That includes a new soccer field, dog park, and playground.

The plan also includes dozens of other smaller proposed projects, within departments like the airport, library, fire, and police.

The overall plan does address the next five years, but Tuesday night's discussion focused on the upcoming fiscal year and the funding.
