Family escapes Greenfield house fire
GREENFIELD, Calif. (KION) A family in Greenfield was able to escape a house fire Wednesday afternoon after a neighbor warned them about smoke coming from the house.
Residents told KION that they were sitting in a middle part of the house watching TV when neighbors ran over and banged on the door, saying there was a fire at the back of the house.
Joanna Rios says the fire started in the room she shares with her son. She said she tried to run back inside to get her belongings, but was stopped by officers.
Rios says this is the second time there has been a fire at the house, but she is thankful to be safe.
"If it wasn't for the neighbors... because usually like this neighborhood usually everyone's in their house, especially right now because it's cold, no one comes out. But yeah, the neighbor, he happened to be home today and he's never really home at this time," Rios said.
The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the family. Firefighters are mopping up at the scene to prevent more flames, and the cause is still under investigation.
