Two years after deadly tornadoes, some Mayfield families are still waiting for housing

MAYFIELD, Ky. (AP) — Two years after the tornado outbreak that killed dozens and leveled much of the real estate in this western Kentucky town, many people are still living through another, slower disaster — the search for housing. Some spent months crashing with family or friends and still haven’t found a new permanent home. Others found themselves pushed out of undamaged houses due to rising rents. Experts say struggles like theirs will only become more important to address as climate change causes more disasters, which have been shown to drive up housing costs and evictions. They’re calling for supporting more climate-resilient affordable housing development before disaster strikes.
