Florida considers allowing volunteer chaplains in public schools

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida school districts could allow volunteer chaplains in schools under a bill moving through the Legislature. A Senate committee approved a bill Tuesday that would give schools the option of allowing chaplains to provide services and student programs at the direction of school boards. Supporters of the legislation say it would provide another resource for children. Opponents say there could be consequences ranging from children receiving bad or unwanted spiritual advice to white Christian nationalists using the program to indoctrinate students. A similar House bill is ready to be considered by the full chamber. The Senate bill has one more committee stop.
