ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey’s defense ministry says Turkish warplanes struck Kurdish insurgent positions in Iraq and Syria in a new cross-border offensive. The ministry said Wednesday’s strikes hit targets on Sinjar Mountain and in the Karacak region in northern Iraq, and in the Derik region in northern Syria. The operations were aimed against Turkey’s insurgents, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which Ankara says has hideouts in northern Iraq, and the People’s Protection Units, or YPG in Syria, which are a U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish force. Ankara says all targets struck included shelters, caves, tunnels, ammunition depots, bases and training camps. A war monitor in Syria says at least four people were killed.
