Two people have died after a chase that started in Napa County and ended in a fiery crash at the main gate of Travis Air Force Base early Tuesday morning, authorities say.

The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said the incident began as a traffic stop along Highway 12, just east of Highway 29, shortly after midnight.

Deputies say the suspects fled, sparking a chase. It’s unclear why they were initially pulled over.

About 20 minutes later, the suspects crashed near the Travis Air Force Base visitor parking lot and the vehicle caught fire.

Deputies used fire extinguishers in an attempt to put out the flames but were unsuccessful, the sheriff’s office said.

Both the driver and passenger in the suspect vehicle died at the scene. Their names have not been released.

Due to the crash and investigation, the Travis AFB visitor center is temporarily closed. Base officials say the Hospital Gate should be used for access for now.

No estimated time of reopening of the gate has been given.
